Pregnancy is a remarkable journey, filled with moments of joy, anticipation, and sometimes, a bit of discomfort, especially as you reach the final trimester.
Mum, you’re in the home stretch! You’ve carried your little one for months, feeling every kick, hiccup, and wriggle. Now, as you reach the final term of your pregnancy, it’s time to slow down, tune into your body, and prepare for the amazing journey ahead. It’s perfectly normal to feel a mix of emotions, excitement, nervousness, and maybe even exhaustion. You’re not alone. Every day thousands of women around the world give birth to healthy babies and I’ve been there too. Let’s dive into some simple practical ways to help you prioritize your wellness and well-being during these final weeks of pregnancy.

Nourishing Your Body: Fuel Yourself and Your Baby with Good Food

Let’s be honest: eating well during pregnancy can sometimes feel like a juggling act. There’s so much advice out there about what to eat and what to avoid that it can become overwhelming. But in these final weeks, simplicity is key. Your baby is growing rapidly, and your body is working hard to support that growth. This is the time to focus on wholesome, nutrient-rich foods that give you energy and strength.

  • Lean into the power of real, whole foods.

Think colourful vegetables, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, berries, nuts, and seeds. Foods that are rich in iron like spinach, lentils, and lean red meat (if you are not vegetarian) are especially important as your blood volume has increased dramatically by this point. This can help you feel less fatigued and prepare your body for the big day ahead. Pairing iron-rich foods with sources of vitamin C, like oranges or strawberries, can boost absorption and give your immune system a little lift too.

  • Let’s not forget about hydration! And the benefits of drinking herbal Tea

Drinking enough water is essential, especially as your body prepares for labour. But here’s a little secret: hydration doesn’t have to mean plain water all the time. This is where our Pure, Natural “Ready for the Big Day Tea” can be your best companion. It’s more than just a delicious pure natural drink, it is a blend of supportive herbs like raspberry leaves and ginger that nourish your body and help prepare you for labour.

During my last trimester, I found so much comfort in these little rituals. Brewing a cup of this tea became a moment of peace in my day, a time to pause and connect with my baby.

Staying Active: Gentle Movement for Strength and Comfort

I know, I know—when you’re in your third trimester, the idea of “staying active” can sound exhausting. But here’s the thing: gentle movement can actually make you feel more energized, less achy, and more ready for labour. It’s not about pushing yourself; it’s about finding movements that feel good for your changing body.

  • Walking

This is one of the simplest and best forms of exercise you can do. It’s gentle on the joints, gets your heart rate up, and helps with circulation. Plus, getting outside for a walk can be a great way to lift your spirits.

  • Pregnancy Yoga

If walking isn’t your thing, consider pregnancy yoga. Yoga is magical during pregnancy because it’s not just about stretching and strengthening, it’s also about connecting with your breath. Those deep, calming breaths you practice on the yoga mat can be a lifesaver when it comes time to push. In fact, research suggests that yoga can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and ease some of those pesky pregnancy aches.

  • Swimming

This is another fantastic option, especially if you’re feeling heavy or experiencing back pain. The buoyancy of the water takes the pressure off your joints and allows you to move freely. It’s like giving your body a break while still getting some gentle exercise. Plus, swimming can be incredibly relaxing, think of it as a little floaty meditation session.

Listening to Your Body & Instinct: Honouring Your Needs

The last trimester is a time to tune into your body. It’s been working hard for months, and now, as you approach the finish line, it’s more important than ever to listen to what it’s telling you. Feeling exhausted? Take that nap. Feeling overwhelmed? Allow yourself to step back and breathe. Also, remember, it’s always better to check and feel reassured than to worry in silence. Calling your GP or midwife to ask questions would be the best way to get the necessary support and reassurance. You know your body better than anyone else, and your intuition is powerful.

  • Enough Rest & restorative sleep

Give yourself permission to rest, even if it means letting go of that to-do list. Remember, mum, you are doing an incredible job, and it’s okay to put yourself first sometimes. If you can, consider taking time off work at least four weeks before your due date. I know it’s not always possible, but if you can manage it, it can be such a relief to have those last few weeks to yourself. Use this time to prepare, nest, and just enjoy these last precious moments before everything changes.

To achieve restorative sleep during these final weeks, consider using a pregnancy pillow or a sleeping belt. These can provide much-needed support and make you far more comfortable. Personally, they were a game-changer for me, making those nights so much easier. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, reading a book, for instance, can help you wind down and fall asleep naturally. Try to create an environment that encourages sleep, aiming to drift off within 15 minutes. Also, reducing screen time before bed can make a significant difference in helping you relax and get the rest you need.

  • Massage

This is also a great time to treat yourself to a pregnancy massage if you can. It’s not just a luxury, it’s a way to ease muscle tension, reduce stress, and feel cared for. And who doesn’t need a little extra Tender Love & Care (TLC) during these final weeks?

Embrace the Final Stretch

These last few weeks can be a rollercoaster. You might be feeling excited, anxious, exhausted, and everything in between. That’s okay. It’s all part of the journey. Be gentle with yourself.

Take it one day at a time. Focus on the little things that bring you joy; a hot bath, a favourite snack, a diner with a friend, or a babymoon weekend with your partner. Let yourself feel all the emotions, and know that whatever you’re feeling is completely valid.

From one mum to another: you’re doing an incredible job. The finish line is near, and you are stronger than you know. So, here’s to the final stretch; may it be filled with love, peace, and a little bit of life's natural sweetness.
